Myrtle Beach to host AAU youth event over Memorial Day weekend 2010

A new sporting event is coming to Myrtle Beach in 2010 that will draw 3,000 to 4,000 youth athletes and 6,000 to 12,000 spectators, officials from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Amateur Athletic Union of the USA, Inc., announced today.
The four-day AAU East Coast Summer Sports Games will be held over the Memorial Day weekend and are open to children under the age of 18 to compete in boys' basketball, girls' basketball, tae kwon do, judo, wrestling, beach wrestling, golf, baseball and track and field, said Roy Edmondson, sports sales manager for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
"It's an event open to all, but we figure the draw will be along the East Coast, from Florida to Massachusetts, and as far out as Tennessee,' he said. A national competition for an Olympic sport is scheduled to come to Myrtle Beach in 2010 for the first time, and local chamber of commerce officials are confident the Confederate battle flag on the Statehouse grounds will not squelch this deal as it recently did with an ACC tournament.
USA Triathlon, the national governing body for the event, selected Myrtle Beach as the site of the 2010 USA Triathlon National Championship Festival on Nov. 6, 2010.
Myrtle Beach also is scheduled to host the athletes in November 2011 and November 2012 as part of the qualifying process for the USAT Long Course Triathlon National Championship. These may be used as world championship qualifying events, depending on the world championship event dates, officials said Tuesday. • Olympic Judo group to hit MB Olympic Judo group to hit MB

Several Horry County firefighters and their out-of-state buddies want to bring a world firefighter competition to Myrtle Beach in 2010 that could draw 1,000 athletes and their families from as far away as Australia.
The city already has hosted four regional Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge competitions and at least 15 state competitions, but this would be bigger and better, said Michael Medeiros, wellness coordinator at Horry County Fire Rescue.
The five-day world competition is composed of timed two- and five-person relays and individual trips through an obstacle course that includes a four-story climb and the dragging of a heavy fire hose and human dummy. • Grand Strand Chamber of Commerce opens doors to aid small business Grand Strand Chamber of Commerce opens doors to aid small business

As his partners bustled around the Grand Strand Chamber of Commerce office preparing for Tuesday morning's ribbon-cutting, it was hard to tell if founder Ward Shepherd was excited, nervous or just his usual self.

Surfside Beach Mayor Allen Deaton is an optimist, even about the month of May.
The motorcycle rallies get "a lot of attention and hype, but they are three weeks," he said. "Is a three-week period going to devastate us? No. Is it going to devastate Myrtle Beach? No. There's still 100 days of summer."
In truth, no one knows what to expect this May.
The chamber and AAU have worked on creating this event for the last six months, Edmondson said.
AAU President Bobby Dodd declined to comment on the event because there is a press conference scheduled for Sept. 23.
"I set out to bring out sporting events, so I'm looking for anything that impacts the community in a positive way,' Edmondson said. "It's going to bring a lot of families into this area."
