Myrtle Beach Helmet Law
Every year, approximately 3000,000 people ride in from all across the country for Myrtle Beach Bike Week. Tomorrow should be no different, only the bikers may be riding in with a chip on their shoulders due to the city passing numerous laws including a much hated bike rule.
As of right now, in the state of South Carolina only motorcyclist under the age of 21 are required to wear a helmet. But since the City of Myrtle Beach is trying to discourage the May rally, they passed an ordinance saying that all bikers must wear a helmet. And those that don't comply will be subject to a $100 fine.
Business Owners Organized to Save Tourism (BOOST)feel that this law is unconstitutional because the state doesn't require riders over 21 to wear a helmet. They are slapping the city with a lawsuit to try and fight it.
Luckily for BOOST, their case will be held by the Supreme Court just one day before the rally is scheduled to kick off. They hope that by going straight to the Supreme Court they will receive a speedy judgment on their case.
Bikers are awaiting the results of the ruling as they need to know whether they are free to leave the helmets at home or will they be risking a $100 fine for doing so.
